Charlestown, Nevis (Wednesday, February 22, 2017) - Former Premier of Nevis and Leader of the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP), the Hon. Joseph Parry said in a recent address that, members of the Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM) led Nevis Island Administration have talked very little about crime or formulated any policies or legislation in Parliament to curb crime activity on Nevis.
The Hon. Joseph Parry stated that January 2017 started with a murder in Nevis and a very serious breach of security occurred a few months ago at the Nevis Airport, in regard to the disappearance of a National Bank ATM and the cash it contained.
“It causes us to wonder about the safety of any aircraft parked overnight and fuel stored to supply aircraft using our airport. To date, neither the good people living in Nevis or nationals in the Diaspora or other affected parties abroad have been respected enough to be told what happened or more importantly, the steps that will be taken or have already been taken by the government to prevent a repeat of this serious security breach,” commented Parry.
In Nevis, businesses are now closed before sunset, people are using burglar bars to barricade themselves at home after dark, calls for security services have exploded and CCTV systems are being deployed in homes and businesses. In response, criminals have now perpetrated crimes in broad daylight including the robbery of Horsford’s in Nevis.
During the NRP’s term in office from 2006 to 2013, the NRP began a robust program to address some issues that were pushing the crime forward. The living conditions of the police were addressed by constructing modern police barracks in St. James’ and St. John’s. NRP upgraded the Charlestown Police Station and built a brand-new Police station in St. Thomas’. All of this was done from the coffers of the Treasury here in Nevis because the security and wellbeing of the people of Nevis must be the responsibility of the government of Nevis. On these life and death matters, we must not be negligent and sit on our hands and conveniently blame St. Kitts for any inefficiency.
Concluding on crime the Hon. Parry stated, “Instead of dealing head on with crime in Nevis, the government has instead resorted to pushing dubious statistics that purport to show crime on the decline. I am here today to tell the emperors Vance Amory and Mark Brantley that they are naked! Their deafening silence and ineptitude must be characterised as gross negligence in regard to reassuring and protecting the people of Nevis.”
