Bus drivers’ claims of police harassment addressed by ACP James

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER OF POLICE with Responsibility for Operations Terrance James, has addressed complaints by passenger bus operators that they are being harassed by police.

The passenger bus operators recently made this claim via a “leaked” document which has been making its rounds on social media, and also while speaking with members of the local media fraternity.

ACP James – under whose ambit traffic issues fall – while speaking at the Police Force High Command’s first press conference for the year, said he doesn’t believe that the officers are harassing the bus operators.

He indicated that when the traffic laws are broken by these individuals and they are approached by police officers, the offenders classify it as harassment when it really is not.

“The passenger bus drivers…for some extended time now, they have been running afoul of the law…

“There are designated bus routes (on which) they should travel. And so normally when they are off of the bus route and they encounter police officers and they receive tickets, this is what they are talking about being harassed by the police. They know that they have a bus route to follow and so we are asking them to follow the bus route.”

More often than not, omnibus operators who would have failed to comply with the traffic regulations in the Basseterre area, would have encountered a specific officer who is particularly strict and unyielding in the manner in which she executes her traffic policing duties.

That officer - Corporal Rouse who is attached to the Beat and Patrol Unit - has been offered commendation by ACP James.

“One of our officers, Corporal Rouse, I must commend her highly. This is an officer who does a real good job in our city and so I think this officer must be highly commended. This is an officer that does a good job and issues tickets on a regular basis.

“If we had just about two or three more officers like Corporal Rouse I think the government will be very glad because the revenue increase and so we would have a good…traffic around Basseterre. So I do not think the officers are really harassing the bus drivers. That’s just a vague general statement.”
