Ambassador Jonel Powell

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Ministry of Sports, and by extension the Government, has planned a number of developmental projects across all sectors of sport in St. Kitts and Nevis for 2017.

According to Sport Ambassador Jonel Powell, the development ranges from the continued upgrading of Warner Park to enhancing individual sports including the yachting industry, and the establishment of the National Sports Council.

The ambassador explained that when it comes to Warner Park, the government is looking to “get the rhythm up” in terms of construction and upgrades at the facility.

He noted that “it has taken a bit of time but we are almost there”.

Powell told SKNVibes Sports that they are earnestly eyeing the development of the yachting industry in the Federation.

That project began last year when the government hosted a number of meetings with various stakeholders on the way forward, including drafting a policy.

Powell noted that they are looking at developing yacht clubs, one for St. Kitts, one for Nevis and one that would cover both islands.

The government is also looking at engaging more teams - both regionally and internationally to visit St. Kitts and Nevis, with the hope of having them host various skill-enhancing camps with juniors and other categories of players.

“We had a number of clubs coming from England in netball, football, cricket [last year]. We are looking at having, even more to come this year… Sports Tourism is a big thing and these are just some of the initiatives that we are looking at.”

Asked about the development of the non-traditional sport disciplines, the ambassador reminded that the government deals with a budget and that there is a lack of facilities to enhance those sport.

To this end, they are mulling the establishment of a National Sports Council (NSC) which would handle most of the groundwork and assessments concerning these potential projects and report same to the government.

“It is not being forgotten; obviously budget is an issue and making sure that we have the necessary facilities in place to actually push them. So, we are looking at [the] proper format which we can follow to really produce what we need to do in those respects. I believe that one of the things that's going to happen is the establishment of  National Sports Council of which we are working on how we are going to establish that  and how it would be executed.”
