Three escape injury in shipwreck

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THREE individuals, said to be French nationals, are currently in St. Kitts after they were shipwrecked in the Mansion Bay/Christchurch area earlier this morning (Feb. 28).

The Divisional Commander for District B - Superintendent Lionel Moore - told SKNVibes that close to 2:00 a.m. police officers attached to the Tabernacle Police Station received a call, and having responded to it, they found Martin Veutel and two others in the area.

He further explained that according to information they received, the French nationals were travelling from St. Martin to Guadeloupe - aboard the Jessy3 - when they encountered navigational problems.

Their 40-foot yacht, SKNVibes understands, was totally destroyed as it appears to have been tossed against rocks in the area.

Superintendent Moore indicated however, that Captain Veutel and the other two individuals did not sustain injury.

High winds prevailed last evening and into today and according to the St. Kitts Meteorological Office, it is owing to a high pressure system which is dominating the area. Resultantly, a tight pressure gradient is causing fresh to strong breeze, which eventually generates rough conditions, especially on the Atlantic side of the island.

The Divisional Commander informed that the authorities are making investigations into the incident and also seeking to confirm the information provided by the individuals.

He said after checks would have been performed, they would be allowed to return to their place of origin via plane.
