Fabiana Liburd of Why Knot Designs
|
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN the world of art Fabiana Liburd is known as ‘AbFab’ - the shortened form for Absolutely Fabulous - and that is exactly what her designs are.
Kittitian by birth, Fabiana Liburd, designer of Why Knot (WK) Designs, has created a clothing line that is truly Caribbean - designs that are lightweight, 100 percent Indian cotton, with bright bold and vibrant colours that make life less complicated.
Not only is she a designer and lover of art but also a photographer, who has mastered the skill of photography by travelling the world.
She completed her education in Canada, where she took courses in Fashion Management, and while living in Anguilla, she was inspired by the country’s high-quality lifestyle and overall beauty of the Caribbean which prompted her to start her line in 2003.
The soft sheer cotton of Liburd’s line is simple stylish; cover up is perfect for the beach and with the right accessories that can be transformed into elegant evening wear.
Her unique designs of island couture are durable with eye catching colours - oleander pink, sunset orange and sea blue that are hugely attractive and are easily laundered and sun dried within minutes.
WK consists of seven basic pieces that can be transformed into several different outfits and styles. The line also includes T-shirts and sandals.
The garments are tailored to the body with knots, which means that there are no zippers or buttons incorporated into the designs.
A single piece can be worn in five different ways. There is a signature scarf and hand-strung bead necklaces that suggest a distinctive lifestyle of casual elegance.
“Why Knot is also an attitude about life and living it to the fullest, to accept opportunities and blessings that present themselves to us and also about taking a chance,” said Liburd.
Liburd, a mother of three, describes herself as a traveller, a creator and an artist who appreciates beauty in all its forms.
“I am a spiritual being enjoying the journey in a human existence,” she said.
St. Kitts was first introduced to the fabulous designs when WK first showcased at “Show Me Your Body” Fashion Show in April 2006.
The designs have also been showcased in Trinidad during Carifesta, at numerous events in Anguilla including the annual Sunday Beach Party at Bankie Banx Moonsplash Event.
Liburd says she plans to expand the T-shirt line and is currently experimenting with new fabrics and making WK international.
“Keeping the planet and its people comfortable, sustainable and beautiful are also the plans for WK’s future. WK belongs to everyone, the rich and famous, musicians, travellers, the young, the old, you and me,” she said.
Liburd said that WK would soon be available at selected locations in St. Kitts, as it is currently available in St. Barths.
