(The enclosed press release is issued on behalf of SCLAN) -- The Spouses of the CARICOM Leaders Action Network (SCLAN) participated in the Nairobi Summit, a high- level conference on the 25th Anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) that took place in Nairobi Kenya from 12-14 November 2019.
The goal of the conference was to advance reproductive health, women's empowerment and gender equality for sustainable development. The Summit brought together heads of state, ministers, parliamentarians, thought-leaders, technical experts, civil society organizations, grassroots organizations, young people, business and community leaders, faith-based organizations, indigenous peoples, international financial institutions, academics and many others.
The conference also mobilized political will and commitments to implement the ICPD Programme of Action. Mrs. Kim Simplis Barrow and Mrs. Sandra Granger, Chair and Co-Chair of SCLAN, announced SCLAN’s commitment stating that “The Spouses of CARICOM Leaders Action Network (SCLAN) remain committed to improving women’s and children’s health and wellbeing in the Caribbean. The members of SCLAN envision a Caribbean and by extension a world without HIV, TB, cervical cancer, early pregnancy and violence where women and girls know their value and truly can reach their potential.”
First Ladies and Spouses of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) launched its network in September 2017, Spouses of CARICOM Leaders Action Network (SCLAN) to tackle issues related to the health and well -being of women, adolescents and children in the Caribbean. SCLAN is a non-governmental organization endorsed by CARICOM Heads of Government.
