Investing in universal health in the Americas: “Right. Smart. Overdue”

Press Release

WHAT:   A two-day forum for high-level development experts to discuss the need for countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to increase national investment in health to 7-8% of GDP, to reach the goal of achieving universal health coverage and universal access to health. During the forum, PAHO will launch its participation in the global campaign for Universal Health Coverage Day (Dec.12), whose slogan is “Universal Health Coverage: Right. Smart. Overdue.”

WHEN:          Monday and Tuesday, 7-8 December 2015

    HOUR:          Opening session, Monday 9-12:30

WHERE:       Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) HQ, Room B / 525 23rd St. NW, Washington, DC (Corner 23rd St. & Virginia Ave)

    WHO:           Opening speakers:
    • Carissa F. Etienne, Director, Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)
    • Luis Almagro, Secretary General, Organization of American States
    • Inés Bustillo, Washington Office Director, UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC)
    • Agnes Soucat, Director, Department of health Systems Governance and Financing, World Health Organization (WHO)

    • Other forum participants: representatives of the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, OECD, MIT, University of the West Indies, Antioquia University, and the ministries of health of Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Peru.
CONTEXT:  Approximately 30% of the population in Latin America and the Caribbean lack access to health care for economic reasons, and 21% do not seek care because of geographical barriers. Ministers of health from throughout the region in 2014 adopted a regional strategy to advance toward universal health coverage and universal access to health. This two-day forum on “Universal Health: an Indispensable Investment for Sustainable Human Development” will bring together economists and health and development experts to examine financing and policy options to build well-organized, comprehensive, quality and financially sustainable health systems that cover everyone and provide access for everyone. Among the country experiences that will be studied are those of Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Mexico, and the United States, as well as the Caribbean subregion as a whole.

HOW:  Opening session may be followed in person or online, in Spanish and English, at the links below (copy link, open a new browser, and paste the link shortly before 10:00 a.m.):
