PAHO recommends actions for countries of the Americas to manage Zika virus and control the mosquito that transmits it

By: PAHO, Press Release

December 4th, 2015 -- The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) this week urged its member countries to maintain their capacity to detect Zika virus and to prepare their health services for the possibility of an increase in demand for services. The recommendations were contained in an epidemiological alert issued on Dec. 1. The alert also urged countries to step up their efforts to control the mosquito vector that carries Zika.

PAHO/WHO is intensifying its joint efforts with member countries to strengthen surveillance and laboratory capacity to detect the virus and in the areas of risk communication, clinical management and follow-up of patients, monitoring of the virus’s geographical spread as well as complications and severe cases, and reporting through channels established under the International Health Regulations.

The alert, “Neurological syndrome, congenital malformations, and Zika virus infection. Implications for public health in the Americas,” may be downloaded at this link: http://www.paho.org/hq/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_download&Itemid=&gid=32405&lang=en
