Basseterre, St. Kitts: Toyota recently unveiled Cairn 70, which is a monument celebrating Toyota’s 70th anniversary.

The structure celebrates the mega company’s sterling record of providing the very best quality the world over.

Cairn 70 is comprised of 221 stones sent from Toyota-related companies the world over, and sits proudly outside Toyota Headquarters in Toyota City.

Based on Minkowski Spacetime, the design of Cairn 70 conveys Toyota’s intention to continue growing into the future.

The stones are arranged on the cairn in the form of a classical music score, drawing from Pythagorean intervals, which are a core concept in musical harmony.

Each stone is accompanied by a plate which states the contributor’s name and country; as well as the stone’s place of origin.

The arrangement of the plates was inspired by the Fibonacci sequence, which symbolizes the order and beauty of natural growth.

The cairn itself, meanwhile, has taken on a wholly modern form, a departure from the pyramid shape of the traditional mile-marker cairn, this monument encourages interaction by inviting visitors inside to view the stones. Katsuaki Watanabe, President Toyota Motor Corporation gave a brief summary of the launch of the monument.

Cairn 70: A Symbol of Unity

It is my great pleasure to be able to introduce Toyota Cairn 70, our monument celebrating 70 years of teamwork across the entire global Toyota family.

It was back in April last year, at the Toyota Global Strategy Conference 2006, when we as global Toyota resolved to create this symbol of our unity.  We have been absolutely overwhelmed with the response as hundreds of stones of all shapes and sizes have landed in Japan from every corner of the world.  Each of the stones has its own very special significance – all documented in this book. Thank you so much for all your efforts.

We chose to mark this historic occasion with a cairn, an ancient man-made milestone marker, to acknowledge just how much of a milestone this year is. This is not just a time to celebrate the past, but also time to make the future: a future of teamwork, dreams and continuous development October 2007.
