BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN fulfilling its mandate to human resource development in the Federation, the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (Taiwan ICDF) has announced the 2009 International Higher Education Scholarship Programme providing “golden opportunities” for students to attend Taiwanese universities.

Study programmes offer Bachelor, Master and Ph.D. degrees in the fields of Agriculture, Business Administration, Technology Management, Human Resource, Public Health, Marine Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Nursing, Medicine and Environment and Sustainable Development, and are all conducted in English.

The 23 scholarships include airfare, housing, tuition, insurance, textbooks and a monthly allowance, and would be provided by the Taiwan ICDF to each student.

In an exclusive interview with SKNVibes, Resident Ambassador Rong Chuan Wu said the gesture strengthens the Embassy’s thrust to improve the quality of human resource on the island.

“These courses are offered in English and so we are encouraging students to apply for these scholarships. They won’t have to learn Mandarin when they attend school which is an advantage for them. We are very concerned about human resource on the island as we believe that it is the key to a country’s development.

“A number of the programmes are geared toward agriculture which is very critical to the development of this nation. Often, we focus on the sciences and Engineering, but we are offering Ph.D.’s in Agriculture which proves that this field is of equal importance.”

Wu added that in the future more emphasis would be placed on agricultural development and vocational studies. In 2008 only 5 scholarships were awarded in the areas of Education, Agriculture and Information Technology.

All interested persons should submit applications to the Taiwanese Embassy located at Taylors Range, Basseterre.
