BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FORTY-FIVE of the nation’s top high school students will be honoured for their outstanding results in the 2009 Caribbean Secondary Certificate of Education (CSEC) examinations.

The public recognition will occur at today’s (Nov. 27) Academic Excellence Recognition Awards Ceremony at the Marriott Resort and Royal Beach Casino. Long-time sponsor LIME is onboard for the 23rd edition of the event, which is being organised once again by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (CIC) and the Ministry of Education.

In order to qualify, students had to amass a minimum of 22 points from their CSEC exams. Under the CIC’s criteria, a Grade I was worth three points while a Grade II and Grade III totalled two and one point respectively.

Local medical practitioner Dr. Garfield Alexander is the guest speaker, taking over from last year’s choice of Barrister-at-law Angela Innis. According to a CIC communiqué released yesterday (Nov. 26), Minister of Education Hon. Sam Condor, Chamber President Mark Wilkin and LIME Country Manager David Lake are all expected to address the honourees, their proud families and well-wishers.

In addition to the 40-plus high school awardees, the CIC statement revealed that students of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC) and teachers from the Federation’s secondary and tertiary schools would also be honoured.

“Among the students to be honoured is Sashia Godet, the Federation’s State Scholar. Students from the Technical, Arts, Sciences & General Studies, Nursing and Teacher Education Divisions of the CFBC will also be receiving awards.

It added, “One teacher from each of the nation’s nine secondary schools and four from the CFBC will be recognised for their invaluable contribution towards the educational development of their students.”
