THE VALLEY, Anguilla – DO not refer to Kenny Dinard, a.k.a. Kenny D, as just a DJ, but also as an entertainer of very high standards. In fact, Dinard claims being known as DJ Kenny D is “corny”.
Dinard has been in the entertainment business for a very long time honing his career into what it is today. An entertainer sounds more like what the Antiguan truly is.
He got involved in music at an early age and developed a passion for the art form by engaging in sound clashes and rapping competitions among his peers in the classroom.
Later on, he formed a rap group called ‘Doing Our Thing’ and also associated himself with a dancehall group called ‘Eagle Cry’.
Dinard’s passion was evident to his teachers and in the summer of 2000 he was recommended to participate in a Young Media Adjudicators Workshop.
While there he was awarded Top Participant and was given a teen-oriented show on Observer Radio entitled “Teen Talk”. He produced and hosted this programme for two years and steadily began his transition from rapping to ‘deejaying’.
It was in 2004 at Vybz FM where he began his ‘deejaying’ stint and took his career to the next level. During this period, Vybz FM was
heard on over 10 different Caribbean islands and Kenny D became a household name in Antigua, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla and St. Martin.
During that time he joined an up and coming sound system “More Life Sounds” as the Mc and their popularity grew even greater as they did numerous performances in neighbouring islands.
He also began hosting shows and events including St. Kitts Music Festival in 2005, St. Martin Summer Festival 2005, Anguilla Talented Teen 2005 and also in 2007, Anguilla Summer Festival Caribbean Beach Party 2005 and 2007, Digicel Caribbean Talented Teen 2007, Anguilla First Reggae Music Festival.
Kenndy D also became the talk of the town when he first moved to Anguilla and started working for Kool FM hosting the morning show.
“I mean everybody was buzzing about the new radio person and someone made a joke and said, ‘hey you’re the talk of the town’ and the name stuck,” he told SKNVibes in an interview.
Although he is proud of what he has done so far, he still wants to take his career to a higher level and become a household name throughout the Caribbean.
“There are a lot of deejays from Jamaica that are known throughout the Caribbean, however, there ain’t much from the smaller islands that are known throughout the other islands,” he said. “I wanna be one of the first to really big up the smaller islands and let people know we have talent.”
He sees those who hate what he is doing as the motivational factor for continuity.
“Well no matter how good you are there will always be people that don’t like you,” he said. “Use them as motivation to continue doing ya thing, and if they hate more you are doing something right.”
The advice his grandmother gave to him from since school age has stuck with him into his career, which is “Nothing in life that is worth it, comes easy, so you have to work hard for what you want”.
So, whenever one wants to get a party started, just ‘Holla’ at ya boy Kenny D…an easy- going, loud mouth, class clown, for a whole other level of entertainment because when he dey dey the event will be copyright.
