CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – THREE men on drugs-related charges were on Tuesday (Feb. 2) fined a total of $5 400 at the Charlestown Magistrate’s Court.

Appearing before Magistrate Yasmine Clarke, Everson Hanley of Clay Ghaut, Gingerland pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of cannabis, which was found on him on January 13 in the vicinity of his home. He was fined $800 to be paid in eight months or spend a similar period in prison.

Leon Jeffers of Stoney Grove, who also appeared before Magistrate Clarke, confessed to possession of a controlled drug.

According to evidence presented in the court, on January 29, 2010 while in Charlestown, police stopped and searched Jeffers and found him in possession of an illegal drug. He was fined $1 600 to be paid in four months or, in default, spend six months in prison.

Shammon Herbert, a resident of Taylors Range, St. Kitts, was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of cannabis with intent to supply. The court was told that Herbert and a female companion were stopped and searched after they disembarked the Sea Bridge ferry at Cades Bay, Nevis on January 13, 2010.

The search revealed a quantity of cannabis sativa in their possession and both parties were arrested and taken to the Charlestown Police Station, where they were charged. Herbert however claimed ownership of the illegal drugs and the charges against his companion were withdrawn.

He pleaded guilty to the offence and was fined $3 000, payable in four months or, if in default, six months imprisonment.
