Man Wanted for attempted murder caught with Cannabis
TORTOLA, B.V.I. - A St. Thomas native wanted in the USVI for attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition was captured on Tortola during a routine traffic stop.
On Tuesday, June 12th, 2008 Akil Nibbs, 23, was stopped by traffic officers as he drove along Waterfront Drive in Road Town. A strong Cannabis odor emanated from the car, prompting the officers to conduct a search which turned up 115.5 grams of cannabis, 70 Dime bags containing cannabis and $2,600 bundled in with the drugs.
Nibbs was subsequently charged with unlawful possession of cannabis and unlawful possession of cannabis with intent to supply. He was also charged with traffic offenses including driving without a BVI driver's license, driving without insurance and driving a vehicle with tinted glass.
Nibbs was taken before Senior Magistrate Mrs. Valerie Stephens on June 17th were he pleaded guilty to the charges and was remanded to Her Majesty's Prison to serve a total of 18 months in prison. The $2,600 in cash recovered during the bust was forfeited to the Crown.
It was not made clear if after his sentence was served Nibbs would be extradited to neighboring St. Thomas to stand trial for the charges laid against him for a 2007 shooting incident.
