BELMOPAN, Belize – ENDING months of speculation of his arrest, Prime Minister Said Musa was taken before the court this morning (Dec. 5) to face charges of theft in relation to US$10M gifted by the government of Venezuela late last year when he headed the government in Belize.

According to Channel 5 News, Musa maintained his innocence of the theft charges which were brought against him by the government.

He handed himself over to the police earlier today and was taken to the Magistrates’ Court under heavy protection and with a crowd of supporters on the sideline.

He left the court after meeting bail of a whopping $100 000 and is to reappear in court on Friday, January 9, 2009.

Musa is accused of illegally diverting US$10 million donated by Venezuela for social projects to a privately-owned hospital.

However, he claims that his actions were “in good faith”.
