Two suffer minor injuries in near-fatal traffic accident

By: Stanford Conway, SKNVibes
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WHILE some said it was “a miracle” and others exclaimed it was “pure luck”, the driver and passenger of motorcar P1605 last night (Aug. 5) silently gave thanks to God for delivering them from what may have been a fatal traffic accident.

At about 10:12 last night, SKNVibes responded to a report of a traffic accident on the St. Peter’s Main Road in the vicinity of the Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw International Airport.

On arrival at the scene, this media house learnt that the driver, Ornette Henry of Saddlers Village, was travelling from Douglas Estate towards Basseterre. However, on approaching the bend near the rear gate to the airport runway, she saw some dirt on the road and veered the car sharply to avoid making contact with it. But in so doing, the vehicle started to skid, which caused her to lose control, and it overturned.

The vehicle subsequently crashed into the concreted-chain-linked fence [some 100 metres from the gate] and ended up within the confines of the airport. It was extensively damaged but both the driver and passenger escaped with minor injuries.

Shortly after an officer from the Police Traffic Department had completed his investigation of the incident, the vehicle, which many onlookers said was “written off”, was overturned and taken away by a tow truck.

Meanwhile, at about 9:45 this morning, another accident took place causing a temporary snail’s-pace traffic flow in downtown Basseterre.

The accident occurred on Fort Street, a short distance from Central Street, and it involved a rental Nissan Pickup (RA499) and a Suzuki Jimny (PA6645).

From the position in which the two vehicles were observed, they were travelling along Fort Street and the Suzuki Jimny collided with the Nissan Pickup, causing minor damage to its rear bumper.  No one was reportedly injured.
