CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – THE Department of Agriculture on Nevis will join the rest of the globe in observing World Food Day on Friday, October 16.

In observance of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) sanctioned event, the Department has scheduled a special sale of agricultural items on Market Street in Charlestown, between the Medical Centre Pharmacy and the Charlestown Public Market.

According to a release from the Department, items on sale would include locally produced meat and meat products, fruits, vegetables and agro processed products. A variety of seafood will also be on sale.

The Department will also take the opportunity to honour four persons for their contribution to the agriculture industry. These individuals will be awarded in the fields of crop production, livestock production, fishing and agro processing. The ceremony, which begins at 10:00 a.m. will also include the launch of a backyard garden competition in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism. The competition will be judged during Tourism Week in February 2010.

Friday’s sale is just one of several activities planned by the Department for the month. Another is the national food campaign launched on October 1, which sees specially marked containers placed in supermarkets that have partnered in the cause. The participating entities are Best Buy in Gingerland and Charlestown, RAMS, Superfoods, Main Street Supermarket and Bargain House.

Members of the public are asked to make contributions to the cause and at the end of the campaign the Department will make a donation of fruits and vegetables to the Alexandra Hospital and the Flamboyant Home.

World Food Day 2009 will be celebrated under the theme “Achieving Food Security in Times of Crisis”.
