By: Melissa Bryant, SKNVibes
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A minor traffic accident that occurred this morning (Oct. 26) on the Keys main road has left the motorists and passengers involved thankful that they escaped relatively unscathed.

Eyewitness reports indicated that at around 7:40 a.m., an unidentified pickup truck was travelling west towards Basseterre along the Keys main road. When the driver stopped to pick up someone, motor vehicle PA346, owned and driven by Patricia Phillip, tried an overtake manoeuvre. The action caused the vehicle to collide with passenger bus H2411, driven by Glenville Liburd, which was travelling east towards Cayon.

The impact caused extensive damage to the front of H2411, while PA346 sustained damages to its front left side.

Liburd and a female passenger of Phillip’s suffered minor injuries as a result of the collision. There was no other person on the bus at the time of the incident.

According to police statistics, 1 140 traffic accidents were recorded in St. Kitts-Nevis for 2008. The total represented a slight decrease from the 1 164 recorded in 2007.

Of those recorded last year, 106 occurred in the Cayon district of which five were serious accidents (passengers had to be taken to the hospital) and one was a fatality.

As of March 2009, the Federation had recorded 256 traffic accidents.
