BVI Press Release
B.V.I. Tuesday, October 27 – The Fire and Rescue Services Department continues to strengthen its emergency services with the purchase of High Pressure Holmatro Lifting Bags (HLB) to aid with vehicle rescues, collapsed structures and general rescue operations.

Acting Deputy Chief Fire Officer Mr. William Penn told the Department of Information and Public Relations that the high pressure bags, to be operational on Wednesday, October 28, are critically important and essential for lifting procedures and for creating space during emergency responses.

The equipment valued at $4,121 consists of three sets of Holmatro Lifting Bags with the lifting capacity of 53,930 pounds, one operating control device, three air hoses, one regulator and two safety hoses.

“This purchase was necessary, in that, the dynamics of emergency needs are shifting. Also, with the repetition and ongoing trend of some casualties encountered, we felt that the equipment would be an asset to saving and protecting lives,” Mr Penn said.

He added that the equipment is equally important for the officers because it gives them the necessary tools and confidence required for being efficient and effective rescuers while, at the same time, ensuring successful outcomes.

“Our goal is to provide quality service at all times and we will continue to find ways of doing so because the public is depending on us,” Mr. Penn concluded.

So far, 20 officers have been trained in using the equipment. The training was conducted by Head of the Support Service Unit, Station Officer Mr. Melvin Jeffers, from October 21-27.

Other officers will be trained in the coming months.

The mission of the Fire and Rescue Service Department is to protect life and property from the effects of fire and all other man-made and natural accidents and disasters.
