UN &OAS Hold Workshop on Terrorism and its Financing

Basseterre, St. Kitts- The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Organization of American States, through its Inter-American Committee against Terrorism (OAS/SMS/CICTE), are collaborating with the Government of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis to hold a Specialized Workshop in the Prevention and Fight against Terrorism and Its Financing for the Caribbean Sub-region. The workshop, to be held at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort in Frigate Bay from February 9-12, 2010, will focus on the Legal Framework and Mechanisms of International Cooperation.

The Sub-regional event will attract the participation of judges, prosecutors and law enforcement officials as well as expert representatives from Antigua and Barbuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and St. Kitts and Nevis.

During the 4 day workshop, participants will discuss their countries’ respective experiences in the ratification and implementation of the universal and regional legal framework against terrorism and its financing. In this connection, delegates will also elaborate on the legislative advances within their individual countries with special reference to their experiences in the fight against terrorism and related criminal offences. Additionally, participants will spend time sharing their national experiences in the investigation and prosecution of acts of Terrorism with a focus on the collection of evidence and investigative strategies. Attention will be given to Terrorist Financing and delegates will address issues such as interdiction and investigation of Cross Border Smuggling of Cash and Goods through informal networks.

On the final day, there will be a dialogue on good practices and regional and international cooperation efforts in criminal matters. OECS member countries current legislation on terrorism and related issues will also be highlighted.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism (OAS/SMS/CICTE) have joined forces to promote cooperation among countries in the Hemisphere in the Prevention and Fight against Terrorism and Its Financing.
