SPIRIT hosts first hurricane preparedness session this Saturday

By: Press Release

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts -This coming Saturday (September 4), the public can look forward to learn what they can do to reduce their vulnerabilities to disaster at this year’s very first Hurricane Preparedness Fair, hosted by SPIRIT, a Sandy Point-based community organization.

The event, organized collaboratively with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) District Five, promises to be an insightful eye-opener as the nation finds itself in the middle of an already-active hurricane season for 2010.

As part of its agenda in Community Empowerment, SPIRIT has organized a full afternoon of engaging discussions and expositions on what to do before, during and after natural disasters, especially hurricanes. The event takes place from 12:00 noon to 6:00 in the evening at the Sandy Point Hard Court.

Preparations are underway and several businesses and hurricane preparedness service providers have already been confirmed to display their goods and services to show patrons how these can be used to cushion the blow of hurricanes.

SPIRIT PRO Judy Dupont said the upcoming disaster preparedness fair is one of the ways the community group has committed to educate and empower the people. And, with the threat of looming hurricanes and tropical storms, the event could not be held at a better time.

“In essence, one of the aims of this fair is to reinforce messages of hurricane preparedness, in collaboration with District #5 of the National Emergency Management Agency and our corporate and community partners.

“We must all be aware that we are never too far away from a potential hazard impact, and that the best method of protection is to always be prepared. We want to assist our community, with the support of our sponsors, in doing those things that can reduce risks to lives and property,” Dupont said.

This, she added, is SPIRIT’s way of continuing its work in improving Sandy Point and its surrounding communities. Companies like TDC, Horsford’s, National Caribbean Insurance, Red Cross, Island Purified, Daniel’s Trading Centre and B’s Enterprises, along with booths by the host organizations.

We encourage everyone to make it a family affair and come out to the Sandy Point Hard Court this Saturday. You are bound to enjoy this first hurricane preparedness fair!
