Hungary and St. Kitts and Nevis discuss areas of cooperation ahead of formal relations

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, May 9th 2011 (CUOPM) - Hungary had approved the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.
     

     

    This has been disclosed by His Excellency Csaba Korosi, Special Envoy of the President of Hungary and Permanent Representative of Hungary to the United Nations when he paid a courtesy call on the Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis.
     

     

    Ambassador Korosi who was in St. Kitts and Nevis for the recent meeting of Caribbean Ministers of Foreign Affairs was thanked by Prime Minister Douglas, who outlined areas of interest that could be pursued including the establishment of diplomatic relations, the appointment of Honorary Consuls, the strengthening of ties between CARICOM and Europe, and support from the European Union in transforming the economy of St. Kitts and Nevis to a more diversified one.
     

     

    Hungary’s Special Envoy indicated that his capital had approved establishing diplomatic ties with St. Kitts and Nevis and had proposed a date in May for the relations to be brought into effect.

     

     
    Ambassador Korosi then outlined several areas of which St. Kitts and Nevis and Hungary could pursue cooperation. The areas included proposals for cancer and diabetes research to reduce incidents of occurrence of both of the diseases, food security and processing, as well as training in these areas.
     

     

    Prime Minister Douglas underscored the Special High Level Meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases that will be held at the United Nations in September 2011, and he encouraged Hungary to support this CARICOM initiative.
     

     

    Climate Change and Renewable Energy were the other areas discussed, in which both parties agreed to pursue cooperation.
     

     

    Hungary also advised that they were a candidate for a non-permanent seat of the United Nations Security Council, and encouraged St. Kitts and Nevis to support their candidature.
