In celebration of a successful year, the UNESCO Small Islands Voice (SIV) Coordinating Committee chartered a catamaran cruise through Blue Water Safaris on June 9, 2007 to thank its coordinating partners and volunteers.

The purpose of the trip was not only a celebration but an opportunity to see the environmental impact of development on the coast line of St. Kitts and Nevis.

The cruise included a trip down the peninsula with a stop for snorkeling in the crystal clear waters of Shitten Bay, and a stop at Pinney’s Beach on Nevis.

Joining the SIV Committee were members from Solid Waste Management Corporation, the St. Kitts Sea Turtle Monitoring Network and the U.S. Peace Corps; who were volunteers for the Clean-Up Troupe that followed the Grand Carnival Parade to clean up and educate the parade watchers about litter.

Along the peninsula the group saw multiple developments taking place, including the Dolphin Marine Park at South Friars Beach. Brown pelicans, terns, parrot fish and trumpet fish were among some of the wildlife they spotted above water and below.

The need for appropriate methods of development on the land for the protection of our marine life was well illustrated.   The alarming effects of the lethal yellowing disease on the coconut palms in Nevis were also seen.
