BELMOPAN, Belize – FIVE people have reportedly died as a result of the flooding of the Mopan River in the Cayo District in Belize on Friday, October 24.

According to Caribbean Net News, all of the victims are from the village of Arenal and had gone shopping in Melchor de Menos on the Guatemalan side of the border. They were travelling in a canoe that was swept away by the strong currents of the river.

The flooding was caused by Tropical Depression Sixteen which has also claimed 14 deaths in Costa Rica, Honduras and Nicaragua.
