Wednesday, December 31 -- His Excellency the Governor David Pearey has announced the appointment of Mr. Philicianno ‘Foxy’ Callwood of Jost Van Dyke as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

The appointment was made by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as part of her New Years Honours List.

Mr. Philicianno ‘Foxy’ Callwood, proprietor of the internationally renowned Foxy’s Bar and Restaurant on Jost Van Dyke, an entrepreneur and musician, is being honoured for his exemplary contributions to the Territory’s tourism industry and the preservation of its culture.

Foxy’s Bar and Restaurant was established in 1968 and his talents as an entertainer, musician and storyteller have been the main drivers behind the growth of Foxy’s from a small beach bar to a world famous “must visit” establishment, while still retaining its original Caribbean ambience.

Its New Year’s parties are renowned and Foxy’s is regularly voted as among the most popular places to ring in the New Year. ~~Adz:Right~~

He founded the Jost Van Dyke Preservation Society that is presently involved in a project to build a replica of an ‘Island Sloop’ used in trade for many centuries throughout the islands, which also forms an integral part of the BVI culture.  He started the ‘Wooden Boat Regatta’ in the 1970s, partly to preserve this tradition, and continues today as an annual event.

As an unofficial ambassador for the BVI, he has promoted the Territory at many events overseas, both personally, and in conjunction with the BVI Tourist Board.

The Governor expressed his personal congratulations to Mr. Callwood for a most deserving honour adding that he is an inspiration to many BVIslanders.

The MBE award was instituted by George V to recognise all levels of service to the United Kingdom during the first 'total' war. It has evolved to embrace service and achievement in all fields.
