BVI Press Release

Trade Department to Encourage more Interest in Craft Alive Village

~~Adz:Right~~Roadtown, Tortola; Tuesday, January 13 – The Department of Trade and Consumer Affairs is planning to embark on an effort to spur greater interest in the offering of the Craft Alive Village.

On January 23, the department will host the first of what it says will be a series of Craft Alive at Five events at the Craft Alive Village.

Acting Trade Promotion Officer in the Department of Trade and Consumer Affairs Ms. Jeanelle Hodge said Craft Alive at Five will offer a mix of entertainment while persons browse through the various booths viewing the variety and arts and craft designed and made by local artisans.

According to Ms. Hodge, “the goal is to make residents of the Territory more aware of indigenous BVI culture and expose the talent of local artistes.”

Ms. Hodge told the Department of Information and Public Relations, “we are hoping to get the locals into the Craft Alive Village as many of them do not necessarily visit on a regular basis and we would like them to see what Craft Alive Village has to offer them.”

She explained that the Craft Alive Village has a variety of locally produced products and she encouraged BVI residents to come out and support local artisans. Ms. Hodge noted too that persons can also see some of the arts and craft in the production stage, helping them to develop a greater appreciation for the work of artisans.

“There are lots of fine items in there, locally done craft and we are actually going to bring entertainment in there so that while you are looking around, there is some entertainment outside,” Ms. Hodge said.

The first Craft Alive at Five will be held on Friday, January 23, starting at 5:00 p.m. at the Craft Alive Village. It will feature performances by the Extreme Band, Lashing Dogs, Jacqueline Richardson and poets from the Virgin Islands Callaloo Poets.

The opening ceremony will also include brief remarks from Premier Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal, OBE, Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Andrew Fahie and Director of Trade and Consumer Affairs Ms. Lizette George.

It is the intention of the department to host the activity on a monthly basis. The village is operated by the Department of Trade and Consumer Affairs as part of efforts to ensure the survival of the local craft industry.

The staging of Craft Alive at Five is in keeping with the mission of the department to facilitate the development and growth of the local business environment by helping businesses to realise their full potential through the establishment and management of programmes and networks that provide information, education, training, finance and other assistance in order to foster sustained economic development in the Territory.
