PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – A protest in response to the United States’ decision to deport over 30 000 Haitians has been planned for Saturday (Feb. 21) at the Broward Transitional Centre in Broward County, Florida.

According to Caribbean Net News, Haitian activists and immigrants will be demanding an end to arrests and deportation of Haitians, the right to work and the release of hundreds of Haitians held in detention centres across the country.

A Tuesday (Feb. 1) report from the US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement revealed that deportation orders had been processed for 30 299 Haitians and that hundreds had been put in detention centres or on electronic monitoring at home in preparation for the deportation.

US authorities complained that the deportations have been delayed because the Haitian government, which has insisted it cannot handle a major refugee deposit, has failed to provide proper documentation for the trips.

As the poorest nation in the western hemisphere, Haiti’s troubles were worsened with the passage of four storms last year that killed over 800 persons and caused increased food shortages.

On an October visit to Miami, Haitian President Rene Prèval urged the US to grant Haitians in the country temporary protection status to avoid their deportation. This newest move is in direct conflict with Prèval’s wishes.

Immigration is a sensitive issue in the Miami area, which is home to at least 800 000 Cuban-Americans. Haitians and immigrants from other Latin American countries deeply resent that when Cubans arrive in Miami they are immediately given the right to stay and work; a welcome that is not rendered upon citizens of any other country.
