BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A myriad of career paths were on full display yesterday (Mar. 12) with the second annual edition of the Basseterre High School’s (BHS) Career Fair within the school’s campus on Victoria Road.

The Fair was organised by the BHS Guidance and Counselling Department and sponsored by the Rotary Club of St. Kitts. Dozens of students were seen milling around the exhibit and interacting with the business representatives and their products.

Stalls were constructed to feature exhibits from a variety of business persons and organisations, including the St. Kitts Marriott Resort and Royal Beach Casino, the UNESCO Small Islands Voice organisation and the Averil Archibald College. Stands also displayed several vocational professions such as garment-making, welding and barbering.

SKNVibes contacted BHS Guidance Counsellor Ron Collins, who said the objective of the Fair was to expose students to career options by having various businesspersons provide information about the skills required to advance in a particular field. He revealed that the school’s fifth form students had received training earlier that day in resume-writing, interview skills and work ethics.

He further stated that the theme of this year’s Fair, which stressed technical and vocational skill development, was different to last year’s focus on traditional professions such as medicine and law.

“It is the Department’s hope that when students will become enthused when they are aware of the many options they have.

“In comparison to last year, the students are more comfortable now and are becoming excited at the number of opportunities available to them. We have stressed that they should not limit their careers to only the traditional professions. This is especially important for those who are not academically inclined, because they need to know there are still honest professions they can get involved in,” Collins said.

The Guidance Counsellor deemed this year’s fair “a success” and reinforced the Department’s intention to continue the annual endeavour.
