BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A Newtown woman was rushed to the Joseph N. France General Hospital after she was hit by a vehicle yesterday afternoon while attempting to make her way across a pedestrian crossing.

Press and Public Relations Officer of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, Inspector Cromwell Henry, in speaking with SKNVibes, informed that the incident occurred at the junction of Fort and Cayon Streets.

He said that at approximately 4:45 in the afternoon, Asha Wharton of John Street was traversing the pedestrian crossing which runs north to south from the building that houses Subway and LIME. He further explained that “when she got to the middle of the crossing” motor jeep PA8036, owned by Christophe Harbour and driven by George Reid of Horizons Villas, “came from Fort Street and collided with her”.

The impact threw Wharton to the ground and, as explained by the PRO, she complained of experiencing pain in her hip.

An Emergency Medical Services Unit was summoned to the scene and transported the woman to the Joseph N. France General Hospital where she was treated.

In a previous interview with this media house, Henry explained that both pedestrians and motorists are charged with the responsibility of doing their part to maximise road safety for both groups.

“My advice to motorists: reduce your speed when approaching pedestrian crossings and be prepared to stop if pedestrians are crossing or attempting to cross. Do not stop too close to the pedestrian crossing. All pedestrian crossings have lines across the road, which indicate the distance motorists should stop from them.”

“Pedestrians: You should always ensure that you are seen by oncoming traffic and do not cross until the vehicle has stopped to allow you to cross. That is one way to ensure that they would have seen you. Do not cross the road from between parked vehicles unless you are sure it is safe to do so. Do not cross in bends and if you are crossing the road at a junction, you should also be on the lookout for vehicles that are turning into the junction.”
