Former President of Cuba and ex-captain of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro

HAVANA, Cuba – Former President of Cuba and ex-captain of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro has been chosen as an honouree at the upcoming CARICOM/Cuba Summit to be held in Santiago de Cuba on December 8, 2008.

According to Caribbean Net News, CARICOM Secretary General Edwin Carrington recognized Castro for his contributions to the region and South African nations including Namibia and Angola “in their fight against apartheid and colonialism, and for providing medical training to Caribbean countries”.

According to the news report, Edwin noted that Castro’s contributions toward the development of the human resources in the Caribbean and the sacrifice made to help free Blacks of South Africa are “two of the greatest contributions to the world”.

There has been no official decision made on the mechanism to honour Castro, however finer details will be officially issued at a later date. The Summit will be the first time the 15 regional leaders will meet with Cuba’s President Raul Castro. Discussions should include “implementing gradual reforms including lifting some import restrictions and encouraging private-sector business initiatives”.

CARICOM and Cuba are currently completing an agenda for the summit and are expected to discuss greater solidarity and cooperation focusing on Cuba/USA relationship. ~~Adz:Right~~
