BASSETERRE, St. Kitts-WHILE many sports fans were focused on the One Day International cricket matches this past weekend, the St. Kitts Amateur Basketball Association (SKABA) was rife with excitement as Cayon, the Conaree Fireballs and the S. L. Horsford Ghetto Roots all eked out wins by three points or less.
Cayon started the weekend of close wins off on Thursday night (July 3rd) in their Junior Division game against Newton Ground. Having yet to win a game this season, Cayon came out hungry against the penultimate team in the division.
Though it was a back and forth match throughout, Cayon’s Omari Warner exerted himself as the most valuable player of the game with 34 points and 11 rebounds, leading his team to a hard fought 61-60 victory. Duran Browne and Jeremiah Locker had 22 and 16 points, respectively, for Newton Ground.
Saturday night’s Premier Division game was almost one of the biggest upsets of the season as S. L. Horsford’s Ghetto Roots, the number two ranked team in the division, nearly lost to sixth place Joseph Parry’s Cotton Ground team, 51-49.
Cotton Ground’s Everson Webb seemed an unstoppable force as he single-handedly racked up 24 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals against the top title contenders. Though obviously not playing at their best, the Ghetto Roots’ usual suspects of Berlie Francis, Troy Wattley and Bertram Richards managed to hang on to their teams lead in the final minutes.
Finally on Sunday night, A Division team Rockers X1 showed substantial improvement in a season that has often shown them to be ineffective at moving the ball. In their match against the Conaree Fireballs, Calvin Wallace and Oneal Liburd were on fire with 37 and 22 points, respectively, while also pulling down a combined 36 boards.
Ultimately, however, the combined efforts of the Fireballs’ Harold Wharton and Richard Munroe were substantial to extinguish the Rockers X1 offensive drive and edge out a 68-67 win for their team.
In other Premier Division action over the weekend, the undefeated Rams Hitters thrashed the Blue Devils 104-75 and the returning champion Hard Wine St. Pauls Tuff Knots used their physical size to dominate the Cayon Lions for a 76-63 victory.
