Account established for athlete in need

By: Ryan Haas, SKNVibes.com

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – A bank account has been opened at the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank for Lydia Jacobs-Pemberton, a former Nevisian sprint queen who is in desperate need of an operation related to kidney complications.

Pemberton is a former champion at the Charlestown Secondary School and competed nationally for Nevis, both locally and at the Leeward Islands level, in events ranging from the 100m to the 400m. However, the young lady recently grew severely ill and now seeks medical treatment.

A costly operation in Cuba is needed for Pemberton and an appeal was made to the public for financial assistance last Friday (Apr. 23). In keeping with this initiative, an account numbered 21223512 was established at National Bank in the name of Pemberton and her husband Lester.

Support has already been pledged by the Nevis Island Administration and the Nevis Amateur Athletics Association, but NAAA President Lester Blackett asked the general public to give “generously” toward the former sprinter’s wellbeing.

“Today could be Lydia, and tomorrow it could be another one of us,” he was quoted as saying in press statement.

Persons interested in contributing toward the worthy cause may also call Eli James at 664-9734 or Imelda Grant at 665-0218 to arrange a donation.

According to Nevis Sports Page, “family members have received numerous calls from persons pledging their assistance and wishing the past athlete a speedy recovery” since the appeal was first made. The general public has been asked to continue their strong support as Pemberton works toward recovery.
