    Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Rt. Hon. Don Mc Kinnon (l) and the Prime Minister of Malta at the last Commonwealth Heads of Government Conference.
    BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, JUNE 30TH 2006  - Commonwealth Secretary-General, His Excellency Mr. Don McKinnon will be among Heads of international and regional institutions down to attend next week's 27th Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government Conference in St. Kitts next week.

     

    The Ambassadors of several nations are also down to attend the meeting.

     

    The Secretary-General is quoted as saying that the 12 Commonwealth CARICOM countries continue to play a key role in the 53-nation organization.

     

    "My agenda with Caribbean leaders will cover preparations for the next

     

    (Commonwealth) Heads of Government Meeting in Uganda in November 2007 and the Commonwealth work in development, democracy building and achieving international trade justice," Mr. McKinnon said in a release.

     

    He said that during the CARICOM Heads meeting, he will be discussing "how the Commonwealth can help with the social and economic challenges faced by the Caribbean."

     

    "We are engaged with a number of member countries on election issues, and are working closely with Guyana as it goes to the polls later this year,"

     

    said the Commonwealth Secretary General.

     

    Also attending the CARICOM Heads Meeting are Director General of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), Her Excellency Len Ishmael; Assistant Secretary of the Organisation of American States, Mr.

     

    ~~Adz:Right~~Albert Ramdin; Chief Justice of the Caribbean Court of Justice, the Rt. Hon.

     

    Michael de la Bastide; President of the Barbados-based Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), Dr. Compton Bourne; Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, Sir George Alleyne; Senior Manager of the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC), Guy Hewitt; Senior Director of the Caribbean Regional Negotiating Machinery, Mr. Henry S. Gill; Chairman and President-Elect of the Caribbean Hotel Association, Mr. Peter Odle.

     

    Chile's Ambassador, His Excellency Alfonso Silva; Italy's Ambassador His Excellency Gerado Carante and German Ambassador, His Excellency Helmut Ohlraun are also scheduled to attend.
