‘Ready, Set, Go!’ for SKN athletes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts-THE 2009 track & field season shot out of the blocks this weekend when approximately 50 athletes from the Federation’s various athletics clubs held their first development meet of the season at the Silver Jubilee Anniversary Stadium in Bird Rock.

The Early Bird Development meet was co-hosted by the Extreme Velocity Track Club and the St. Kitts-Nevis Amateur Athletics Association (SKNAAA), and gave the athletes their first real taste of competition as the 2009 season looms just over the horizon.

SKNVibes spoke to Darnel Esdaille, Head Coach of the Extreme Velocity Track Club, and Lonzo Wilkinson, Coach Coordinator for the SKNAAA about their reasons for hosting the meet on.

“Darnel came up with a good idea that after coaching these athletes in the academy for six weeks we should have a test. The reason for a development meet is to test the athletes to see how much they have achieved and improved since we started training,” Wilkinson said.

Esdale said that the meet served a two-fold purpose of preparing the athletes for the new year by building their camaraderie as team St. Kitts-Nevis and also “encourages competition between our peers so we could develop quicker than usual”.

Both men said that being able to practice at the newly built stadium added greatly to the sense of developing the athletes for regional competitions.

“I guess the difference for us is the whole awe of being on a surface track. Also, the atmosphere of competition makes it a bit different; it feels like you are actually competing when you are out on the surface. You can see a little more vigor and zest in the athletes’ running than when we normally compete at Basseterre High School on the grass,” Wilkinson said.

During the meet the athletes participated in unorthodox running events, such as the 150m, 300m, 600m, and the 1600m, which Esdale said served a variety of training purposes for the coaches.

“The intention behind running these distances is that they are practice events and the athletes would then be more comfortable. The second thing is that it is something different, so there would be a bit more excitement at the meet and we would be able to have a little bit of fun doing some of these unusual events.

“It really gives the coach a good indication of what needs to be done for the athletes to go over those practice distances for the competition races,” he said.

With major events such as the Carifta and Caribbean Games approaching in the 2009 season, Wilkinson said that the coaches plan to hold weekly development meets in the new year to ensure that “the athletes will be able to better see their progress and know where improvement is needed before they head overseas”.
