Three Sports Meets in one day

Officials at Maude Cross Pre
By: Curtis Morton, Press Release

CHARLESTOWN Nevis, March 2nd 2011 - Sports enthusiasts and sporting officials on Nevis had their work cut out for them on Tuesday 1st March when three schools on Nevis hosted their annual sports meets.

The three schools were:  The Elizabeth Pemberton Primary School; the Belle Vue International Primary School and the Maude Cross Preparatory school’s Pre school division.

The Maude Cross Prep school preschoolers had their meet at the Elquemedo Willet Park and commenced with a march past of the athletes.  This included a salute to the patron of the day, Mrs. Caroline Pemberton of Craddock Road.

The children then competed in various fun races which brought smiles to the faces of the spectators present. These included the spoon and ball race; tyre race; fill the bucket and flat races.  The afternoon’s event culminated with a  4x50 meters  relay which created much excitement.

The Teachers and parents not to be outdone, participated in the final race of the day—a fifty meters thriller.

At the end of the day, the scores were:

    Green 2011 champions 151
    Gold --134
    Red—112

The Victrix Ludorum was Latejah Bailey of Green House with 30 points.

The Victor Ludorum saw a tie between Adjua Henry and Mayur Daswani who both got 32 points

The announcer for the day was the very competent Chesley Faro Davis.

Over at the Bath Village playing field, former athlete and NEVLEC employee, Ms Paulette Hanley took the salute for the Belle Vue Int Primary school’s sports day, as the Patron.

The representatives of the two houses in ORANGE and GREEN, marched smartly around the field as stipulated by Sports Officer, Mr. Winston Smith.

The athletes then took to the track and provided a complete package of athletic entertainment for the sizeable crowd on hand.

The obvious star of the day was the spirited Zelisha Shallow who despite sporting a broken left hand, ran with skill and determination, to outrun her opponents in all of her races and is certainly one to look forward to—come Nevis’ mini Olympics.

The day’s event climaxed with the exciting relay races and the highly competitive 100 meters flat races.  At the end of the day, no fewer than five records were broken.

The two houses remained close on points throughout and at the end of the day, it was an almost fairy tale script:

    Orange house—champions 190 points
    Green house—188 points.

The announcers for the day were the energetic combination of Messrs Shoy Daniel and Kimani Webbe.

Up at the flattened Flats, next to the Nelson Mandela Community Center, the Elizabeth Pemberton Primary School for the second year running held their annual sports meet on home turf.

The meet was held under the distinguished patronage of Mr. Walter Morton, the vivacious Public Relations Officer at the Nevis Social Security office--- a former Teacher at the School, who took the salute at the March past.

The proceedings were announced by the ever humorous Lester Liburd and saw some very competitive races, witnessed by easily the largest crowd for the day.

It was obvious by the output that the athletes were not only competing for personal glory and for their individual houses but were also making a statement towards the grand Inter Primary event, slated for the 6th of April.

The overall point standings were not available up to press time.

However, of major concern is the fact that too many schools are having their major events on the same day when it is believed that with better planning, there will be less pressure on the limited number of sports officers and other officials, including camera crew and spectators who will be able to witness more of the events live.
