BASSETERRE, St. Kitts-YOUTH football once again took center stage in the Federation on Friday (Oct. 23) with the launch of the 15th St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank Schools Football competition.
The competition kicked off with the returning champions of the Primary School League, Tucker Clarke Primary, knocking off Estridge Primary.
The match was tied at one goal apiece at halftime, but Tucker Clarke stormed back after the break to win the encounter 3-1.
Yohanes Battice led the way for Tucker Clarke with two goals, while Raheem Patrick lent assistance with his goal as well. Alex Charles was the lone goal scorer for Estridge during the match.
Also playing on Friday afternoon was Violet Petty Primary against the 2008 runner-up Dr. William Connor Primary.
Violet Petty dominated the match against their favoured opponents, leading the match 3-0 at halftime. Dr. William Connor scored a single goal in the second half, but it was too little too late as Violet Petty went on to win 4-1.
Jaleel Clarke and Jahvel Wilson each contributed two goals for Violet Petty, while Jason Jeffers was the lone goal scorer for Dr. William Connor.
Prior to the youths taking to the field, a brief opening ceremony was held at the Warner Park Football Stadium and the attending athletes received words of encouragement from officials of the Ministry of Sports, the Ministry of Education, St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association and National Bank.
Patricia Wilkinson spoke on behalf of the sponsors and said that her company fully intends to continue donating to the league and giving the young boys a chance for bonding through sport.
“National takes great pride in sponsoring programmes that promote skills, partnership and camaraderie. It is indeed heartwarming for National to be able to provide the resources necessary to host this league.
“While a select few of the players will taste the sweetness of victory…all will be rewarded with the lifelong lesson of working as a team,” she stated.
Matches in the Primary School competition will continue on Wednesday (Oct. 28). In Zone 1, Bronte Welsh will take on St. Pauls, Molyneaux will challenge Irishtown and Newton Ground will face Dieppe Bay.
In Zone 2 on Wednesday, Tyrell Williams will play Dean Glasford, Beach Allen will encounter Sandy Point and Edgar T. Morris will face Cayon.
