The Nevis Historical and Conservation Society in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of Agriculture will mark the 2016 International Museum Day scheduled to be held on Wednesday,May 18 2016 by hosting an event at the New River Estate where students will be given a guided tour of the last commercial sugar estate in Nevis by Mr Theodore Kelly, who is one of the last person to see the sugar mill in operation.
Students will also have an opportunity to listen to dramatised original storiesof the estate.
The theme of the International Museum Day is Museums and Cultural LandscapesThe objective of International Museum Day is to raise awareness of the fact that, Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.
New River estate is the last functioning sugar plantation on Nevis. It dates back to the 1700s. The guided tour which will be documented by media houses will help students and members of the public to see what happened on the estate many years ago
