GIS Press Release

Roadtown, Tortola - Traffic Light Technicians with JoClaud Enterprises Limited will be in the Territory for the next four to five weeks to install traffic lights and signals at the Admin Drive and Waterfront Drive intersection and at the Road Town Roundabout.

Project Manager, with Joclaud Enterprises Ltd., Mr. Terrance Thomas told the Department of Information and Public Relations in a GIS Radio Report that “the plan of action is to begin excavating holes that will hold the traffic lights and signals.”

Four holes will be excavated at the Admin and Waterfront Drive intersection and a total of seven holes will be excavated at the Road Town Roundabout, four of which will be used for pedestrian crossings, Mr. Thomas added.

Once the traffic lights and signals are erected, a chief technician from Siemens ITS, which is the parent company for JoClaud Enterprises, will be in Tortola from June 20- 26 to give advice on the finalisation of the sequencing of the lights at both areas, Mr. Thomas further stated.

Upon completion, the traffic lights will be operated by a sensor system that will change the lights based on the traffic demand...

Once the installation of the lights and signals is completed according to Mr. Thomas, “pedestrians can expect to cross safely because they will have their walk signals and there should be an overall reduction in the amount of time that motorists would have to wait in traffic.”

The duration of the project is estimated between four and five weeks and during that time motorists are asked to exercise patience and caution as they traverse the areas affected by the installation.

Persons wishing to hear the GIS Radio Report today with Mr. Thomas in its entirety can tune into ZCCR at 5:30 p.m.; ZVCR at 6:15 p.m.; ZBVI at 6:35 p.m. and ZROD at 10 p.m. The programme can also be heard on Wednesday on ZKING at 7:45 a.m. and on ZBVI at 8:35 a.m.

On March 13, Government signed a contract with JoClaud Enterprises Limited to install traffic lights and signals at the Road Town Roundabout and the Admin Drive and Waterfront Drive intersection in an effort to relieve traffic congestion in these areas, while providing a safer and pedestrian friendly capital, reaffirming Government’s commitment to implementing improved traffic management systems for Road Town.
