CEMSS dominate to snag fourth consecutive Interschool title

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – STUDENTS, parents and fans of the Charles E. Mills Secondary School (CEMSS) were all smiles last evening (Apr. 2), as their athletes dominated the 41st Edition of the TDC Interschool Championships.

Capturing a whopping 31 Gold, 23 Silver and 12 Bronze medals, the CEMSS almost doubled the Gold medal tally of second placers, the Washington Archibald High School which had 16 Gold, 23 Silver and 24 Bronze medals.

In a distant third place was the Charlestown Secondary School with 12 Gold, 11 Silver and 22 Bronze medals.

The CEMSS’ dominating performance on the first day sealed the title for the defending champions, and their coach Llewellyn Pike, was brimming with confidence when he told reporters that after looking at the composition of last year’s team, he was not surprise that they won again this year.

“I knew that before the Meet started, we (would) win. Because the athletes that we have, (based on) their performance from last year and coming into this year, they were in the same age category, so I knew it would have been a runaway.”

The Hon. Shawn Richards, Deputy Prime Minister and Parliamentary Representative for the area in which the school is located, told SKNVibes Sports, “I think the 41st Edition of the TDC Inter-High-School Championship has been a very good one. The athletes came out and showcased their athleticism, and at the end of the day you had Sandy Point Charles E. Mills Secondary being declared victorious. But all the athletes are winners and they represent the best from these schools.”

The second day of athletics lived up to the hype, as many of the fans came out to witness the Boys U-18 100m finals.  It was a battle of two; Demetri Brown of the CEMSS and Charlestown Secondary’s Marcus Duberry.

With the crowd behind him, Brown was obviously brimming with confidence. With both the athletes focused on the finish line and with bragging rights for a year up for grabs, they rocked back in the blocks and with the shot of the gun they were off. But that was quickly followed by another, calling them back.

On the second try, Duberry got the better start of the two and left his competition fanning his dust – much to the delight of those who had travelled from Nevis to lend their support.

But Brown redeemed himself in the 4x100m relay, winning by more than two seconds.  Charlestown was absent from that finals.

CEMSS took home several individual prizes as well as the Best March Past title for their presentation on the opening day.
