SKNAAA pays tribute to fallen stalwarts

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SEVERAL stalwarts of athletics in St. Kitts and Nevis, who would have passed away in recent times, were recognized over the weekend at the TDC Inter-High School Championships.

Among those to whom tribute was paid were avid sportsman, Steadroy Techeira and former Governors General, Sir Probyn Inniss and Sir Cuthbert Sebastian.

At the opening ceremony of the 41st High School meet (Apr. 1), banners were unveiled with the names and faces of four individuals who died over the last few months, including popular bartender Adissa Williams.

The St. Kitts-Nevis Amateur Athletics Association (SKNAAA) laid wreaths in remembrance, while giving a minute of silence for the four individuals, who were said to have either played integral roles in the sport or were always present at the various events.

Techeira died in mid-February of this year. His untimely death sent shockwaves through the sports community in St. Kitts and Nevis, as well as the education fraternity.

Students and teachers from the Washington Archibald High and Basseterre High Schools, among others, also laid wreaths at the event.

Inniss was the first Governor General of the Federation and he died in March. He was accorded a state funeral.

Former Governor General Sir Cuthbert, who died recently, was always present at the various athletics events held at the Kim Collins Athletics Stadium.

SKNVibes understands that he died at his home on Cayon Street, and he too would be accorded a state funeral, to take place next Monday (Apr. 10).

Williams was also a regular fixture at the events held at the Kim Collins Athletics Stadium. He was a bartender there for a number of years.

SKNVibes takes this opportunity to extend condolences to the family and friends of these individuals.
