PLP Press Release

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, April 7, 2017 (PLP PR Media Inc.) -- The newly elected National Executive of the Peoples Labour Party (PLP) is rebranding the annual Dr Harris Constituency Number Seven Kite Flying Competition normally held on Good Friday of each year by making it a national event.

“The Constituency #7 Branch of PLP is hosting this year’s chapter of the Kite Flying Competition,” announced PLP’s National Secretary Ms Myrtilla Williams, following a decision that was reached at a meeting of the PLP National Executive held on Thursday April 6 at the Team Unity Headquarters on Cayon Street in Basseterre.

“The competition was introduced to help revive the cultural pastime of kite flying on Good Friday, which this year falls on April 14. The event is held at Black Rocks pasture. But while it was previously a Constituency #7 affair, this year it is going to be a national event and word on the ground is that it is creating a lot of interest.”

According to Ms Williams, the participants will be competing in five categories: Highest Kite, Most Colourful Kite, Largest Kite, the Oldest Participant and the Youngest Participant in the competition.

She added: “Prizes will be awarded to the winners in each of the five categories with the biggest flying kite taking away a whopping $1,000.”

Dr the Hon Timothy Harris, Political Leader of the Peoples Labour Party, Team Unity, and Member of Parliament for the area who is also the Prime Minister of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, said that he was happy to be able to continue the competition for yet another year and to have it expanded to a national level.

“We intend to make this Good Friday family day bigger and better,” said Dr Harris. “It is not restricted to Constituency #7.  Everyone is invited to come and take part in the Kite Flying Competition. Last year there was a kite from Nevis in the Competition.”

The PLP Leader observed that there will not be a single dull moment with the variety of other activities such as cricket, dominoes, draughts (checkers), bouncing castles for the younger ones and the crowd favourite the tug of war being on offer as well.

Mr Eldon ‘Big T’ Harris, a member of the organising committee noted that the presence of food and drinks vendors, and music that will be provided by the evergreen HellFire Sounds, will ensure that there is more than enough to guarantee a fun-filled laid back day for everyone.

“We start at 11:00 am and the events go way into the evening,” said Big T. “This year we have extended the competition. We normally do the constituency (#7) alone, but we are now open to the entire island to participate in the activities.”

He added that people are getting excited about the event because they have been calling the PLP Secretariat to register for the different events, “but we do not do registration in advance. We do it on site in the morning. But people have been asking, which is proof enough that it is going to be a real big event, and I would request all to be a part of this memorable event.”
