BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IT is not a household sport in St. Kitts and Nevis, and by extension the Caribbean, but Handball is slowly making its way into the the twin-island Federation.
The sport, which is very popular in Europe, has already been played locally with a team representing the Federation at the regional level, and as such local officials are eager to spread it throughout the length and breadth of St. Kitts and Nevis.
This is according to President of the St. Kitts-Nevis Handball Association (SKNHA), Leroy Greene, who told SKNVibes Sport that a workshop which begins today (Apr. 18) is the first step on a long road to have the sport discipline recognized.
The workshop, which runs from April 18 -27, has seen a number of participants registering for the event, which was beyond the Association’s expectations, Greene said.
“Well, what we are doing here is that we are coming out to the basements. And what we are doing now is having some workshop. Tuesday and Wednesday would be a team Handball Workshop, Thursday and Friday we would have the referees and delegates’ workshop, and Saturday we would have our Championship in Netball City,” Greene explained.
The final segment of the event would be a beach volleyball competition, which fits into a course that was undertaken earlier this year, he added.
Coming off of this course, the President told SKNVibes that it is expected that those representatives would go back to their various districts and spread the sport.
This, he noted, would enhance development of the sport in the Federation.
“We have a number of coaches from the Sports Department in St. Kitts and the Department in Nevis, and a number of players from the Handball team, who went to Guadeloupe last year, would be participating in those workshops.
“We expect that they would go back into their respective communities and in turn infuse their communities with team Handball so that we can have teams around the different communities.”
The workshop begins at 9:00 a.m. with the official opening slated for 1:30 p.m.
