Music in Schools Phase Two Come to Fruition with Workshop 1 of 4

By: EMU, Press Release

(EMU) – St. Kitts, May, 2nd 2017: The Government of Colombia through the Batuta Foundation in alliance with the Ministry of Education has chartered an initiative to teach the resourcefulness of music in the classroom.

Launched in December 2016, the project commenced its second phase of the Music in Schools Project, with the first of four workshops on Tuesday 25th through Friday 28th April.  The four day workshop was held at the Irish Town Primary School with teachers from the public primary and secondary levels.

The Batuta Foundation is an organization that works with children to teach them music. Participants were taught ways in which to engage students in the lesson by introducing music in the form of instruments and songs in the classroom.

“We are personally charmed to have been here and to take all these experiences back home with us,” expressed Ms. Maria Cristina Rivera, Director of the Department of Education and one of the facilitators of the workshop. She continued, “We hope that the teachers from St. Kitts would be able to replicate with their children what we have worked on with them.”

“The implementation of music programs within primary schools in St. Kitts is a goal for the Ministry”, assured Education Planner, Mr. Quinton Morton.  “We recognize the potential of music to influence. If our teachers learn to teach music not only will our students have another way to express themselves but those who hold true to music will one day be producers and musicians.”

During the closing ceremony guests were treated to a musical presentation by the participants.  Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Mr. Vincent Hodge expressed pleasure to the participants, the Government of Colombia and the Batuta Foundation.  He stated that the program would be a great undertaking by the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, but a worthwhile effort. “This is something that we have to introduce in all our schools.  This is the type of aesthetics that we need to establish within our schools and enable the youths to develop,” assured the Permanent Secretary.

Three additional workshops are expected to be conducted in May, June and August of this year.

The Government of Colombia has contributed not only to the Federation but is known for the institutional strengthening of Caribbean countries through the development of regional actions. Local benefits include November 2016 during which thirty teachers were engaged in the three day training initiative on the model and methodology of music for choir and assembly of musical instruments which was developed by the Batuta Foundation. This was followed by the donation of two hundred instruments in December of that same year.
