BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, Monday 15th May, 2017 – Two years ago when the community group O.R.A.N.G.E (Organization Really About Next Generation Empowerment) was formed it made a commitment to community development in the West Basseterre area. Spearheaded by Samal Duggins, the youth group has already in its very short existence made many meaningful contributions to the area in education, sports and health to name a few.
On Saturday 12th May, 2017 some members of O.R.A.N.G.E visited the St. Kitts Cardin Home in St. Johnston Village to give back to the residents. Packages of adult diapers, catheters, toiletries and juices were presented to the home. The items were graciously received by Lavern Bass, assistant nurse manager. In accepting the donation on behalf of the residents, Ms. Bass mentioned that the donation comes at a very special time as the home is celebrating its 90th year of operation and said that it will “help us in continuing to provide exceptional service and care to the residents.” Another special presentation was made to one of the residents of the home, Ms. Una Duport, a centenarian & eldest female in the home, who is on her way to celebrating 102 years of life. In celebration of Mother’s Day, a beautiful gift basket was presented to Ms. Duport.
The laughter that permeated through the halls of the St. Kitts Cardin Home on Saturday afternoon was accentuated by the sweet sounds of the steel pan music which was provided by EBJ Harmonics, another youth group in the Village area that continues to play its part in community development.
“O.R.A.N.G.E will continue doing its part, no matter how small, to ensure that our mission that is centered on community development is met. What we want is a ripple effect in our community, where we will inspire others to effect change in their own community,” said Samal Duggins.
In the next coming months O.R.A.N.G.E will be rewarding a number of students from West Basseterre who have performed exceptionally well in their examinations. For the past 12 years Duggins has made a financial contribution to the ‘best performing’ male student at the Dr. William Connor Primary School.
