St. Kitts and Nevis congratulates Moon Jae-in on becoming the 12th President of the Republic of Korea

By: OPM, Press Release

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, May 15, 2017 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris has congratulated His Excellency Moon Jae-in on becoming the 12th President of the Republic of Korea, following a tightly contested presidential election on Wednesday, May 10th.

Moon won 41.1 percent, or 13,423,800 votes, to become the President of the Republic of Korea.

In his congratulatory message, Prime Minister Harris wrote:

    “Your Excellency

It is with great pleasure that I extend, on behalf of the Government and citizens of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, and indeed on my own behalf, heartfelt congratulations on the successful completion of free and fair elections in Korea and your resounding victory. This victory clearly presents the opportunity, as you have said, ‘to open a door for a new Republic of Korea’.

With the highest voter turnout in two decades of presidential elections, I am confident that the Korean people were determined to place their trust in the right candidate. At this crucial time, where international and domestic issues are increasingly complex, it takes a firm, moderate and stable hand to steer the ship of state.

Your campaign proposals, Your Excellency, have been admirable. I am pleased to learn of your intention to renew the Sunshine Policy toward North Korea, to undertake a process to rein in large corporations to benefit Koreans, to spur employment by creating 12,000 jobs, etc. I wish you success in all of these endeavours and many more.

I look forward to continued partnership, both bilaterally and multilaterally, as we continue to tackle global challenges and seize opportunities for the benefit of all our peoples.

Please accept Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.”

President Moon was sworn into office immediately after official votes were counted on May 10th, replacing acting President and Prime Minister, Hwang Kyo-ahn.
