Work on traffic lights moving on schedule

    Roadtown, Tortola - The Ministry of Communications and Works is informing the public that the traffic light installation is progressing on schedule and that work should be completed by the end of the month. 

     

    “The most recent accomplishment in the project has been the casting of the footing, which will serve as the bases for the poles at the Admin and Waterfront Drive intersection and at the Road Town Roundabout,” Project Coordinator with the Ministry of Communications and Works, Mr. Andrew St. Hilaire told the Department of Information and Public Relations.

     

    “While the footing is setting, the team of technicians from JoClaud Enterprises Limited have retreated to the Public Works compound where they will be carrying out preparatory work to assemble the light equipment and the boards that will go into the control box,”, Mr. St. Hilaire continued.

    The next highlight that will be visible to the public according the project coordinator will be the erection of the poles and the arms that go across the road, which will be done this weekend.

     

    The Public Works Department has been intricately involved in this project. “PWD totally dedicated the officer for traffic lights, Mr. Ellison Rhymer, and he has been working alongside the technicians for the duration of the project and will undergo training with the chief technician from Siemens when he arrives in the Territory next week to finalize the installation,” Mr. St. Hiliare said.

     

    The Public Works Department and the Ministry of Communications and Works have been working in conjunction with the Traffic Division of the Royal Virgin Islands.

     

    Police Force to manage the traffic for the duration of the project.  “At the inception the contractor was informed to minimize any disruptive work and to concentrate efforts during the evenings and weekends,” Mr. St. Hiliare reiterated. 

     

    “There have not been any major disruptions, only minor delays to the flow of traffic.  Control devices like cones and the police lines have been used,” the project coordinator said .

     

    Mr. St. Hiliare thanked motorists and pedestrians on behalf of the Ministry of Communications and Works. “Motorists and pedestrians have been very patient and we would like to thank them for exercising patience and caution while traversing these areas. At the end of the day we will certainly have a product that is more beneficial to us as motorists and as pedestrians.”

     

    On March 13 Government signed a contract with JoClaud Enterprises Limited to install traffic lights and signals at the Road Town Roundabout and the Admin Drive and Waterfront Drive intersection in an effort to relieve traffic congestion in these areas,while providing a safer and pedestrian friendly capital, reaffirming Government’s commitment to implementing improved traffic management systems for Road Town.
