(EMU) – St. Kitts, June 2nd, 2017: The Early Childhood Development Unit marked the start of the thirty-third anniversary of Child Month activities with a cocktail reception held at Government House on 1st June.

The reception which was held under the distinguished patronage of His Excellency the Governor General Sir S. W. Tapley Seaton, G.C.M.G., C.V.O., Q.C., J.P. was intended to pay homage to early childhood stalwarts past and present.

During his keynote address Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Mr. William Vincent Hodge issued his profound gratitude to all early childhood facilitators within the federation. He thanked the organizers for making this landmark event come to fruition, he stated, “It is an honour for the Ministry of Education to join with the Governor General to host this event.”  He continued, “This is the first of such an official event to show appreciation to all workers in early childhood, who from its inception has done and continue to do an exceptional job in moulding our nation’s children from birth.”

The theme for this year’s child month is, “For Every Child Early Moments Matter. Officially opening the month of activities on 31st May was Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture, Hon. Shawn Richards. During his address to the nation, Minister Richards affirmed the government’s support to the Early Childhood Development Unit. “Child Month Celebrations remain a concerted effort to raise national awareness of how important early childhood is to the long-term health and wellness of our nation’s children,” he assured.

He added, “It is essential that we focus on the emotional, social and physical development of our country's youngest children to ensure their future well being. We recommit to ensuring that through our Early Childhood centres and the work of the Early Childhood Development Unit, that every child has access to such experiences. Our commitment to education demands that individuals and communities partner together to provide safe and nurturing environments.”

The activities continued on Friday 2nd with a church service at the Zion Moravian Church, for early childhood facilitators and their wards within the Basseterre zone as well as treated the patrons within the capital city to the entertainment of a flash mob at four locations in Basseterre including Church Street and culminating at The Circus.
