(EMU) – St. Kitts, June 12th, 2017 -- A collaboration between the Ministry Justice, Legal Affairs and Communications, Department of Information Technology, the Ministry of Education and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) produced a training workshop surrounding the Child Online Protection Initiative.
This workshop, which ran from 8th – 9th June, was aimed at secondary schools students to prepare them, principals, ICT heads of departments, teachers, parents, guidance counsellors and Education officers, to identify and resolve issues around internet security and bullying.
As a society develops the increase in digital devices and internet access becomes a daily necessity. The Ministries believe that safety and security online are critical if we are to leverage the advantages of the Internet.
Topics that were covered during the sessions included the education system as a whole and what role educators play in developing cyber security. The workshop featured elements of cyber bullying and its impact(s) on the school and home settings.
“One of the key elements and mandates of the ITU is to address the issues relating to information/communication technology and its impact on social development, looking specifically (in this instance) at the protection of children,” Sylvester Cadette, Programme Officer, ITU Caribbean Area Office.
Locally, a draft policy is currently being reviewed regarding cyber security and e-safety in schools.
