BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - OFFICIALS at the Early Childhood Development Unit have reported that their month of activities to recognize June as Child Month was a success.

This was highlighted by the large turnout of people for the Rally held on Friday (Jun. 30) through the streets of downtown Basseterre.

Acting Director at the Unit, June Wallace told reporters that they marched under the theme “For every child early moments matter” and that she was happy with the turnout of parents, teachers and children.

She indicated that they were joined by representatives from all the early Childhood Development Centers around the St. Kitts as well as those from Nevis.

Wallace stated that the purpose behind the theme was to promote early brain development and simulation and as well as to focus on early nutrition and nurturing for children.

“Early nurturing means that you want the best; the best type of child that you can have. If you have early nurturing you would be able to prevent certain ills that can happen if you don’t have the early stimulation.”

The Director explained that the Early Childhood Unit focuses on the daycares and nursery schools that are both public and private.

“At the Early Childhood, we train and we advocate on behalf of children. We are the advocates for the nation’s children and, that is why we would have this march annually,”

Further, she noted that the theme also calls on the community to assist with instilling values and other basic morals so that a child could grow up in the way he or she ought to be.

This year, the Unit held a number of activities, including a Concert, a Sports Day at the Kim Collins Athletics Stadium and a Football Festival in Warner Park.
