    Charlestown Nevis (March 5, 2004)
    -- Canary Islands-registered Spanish cruise ship Vistamar sailed into the Charlestown Harbour for its inaugural visit to Nevis Thursday afternoon, bringing in 264 tourists most of whom were Germans.
     
    The ship, which had anchored main stream was welcomed by a party of Nevis Island Administration, Nevis Tourism Authority, and Nevis Air an Sea Ports Authority officials, who boarded the ship at 3:30 p.m.
     
    The party was made up of Mr Devon Liburd (Sales, Marketing and Statistical Manager, Nevis Tourism Authority), Ms Elmeader Brookes (Director Research and Development, Ministry of Tourism), and Mr Howard Taylor (General Manager, Nevis Air and Sea Ports Authority).
     
    Others were Mr David Hendrickson (Chief Security Officer, Nevis Air and Sea

    On board the 7490 ton vessel the party was welcomed by Captain Alberto Palacios and Chief Purser Ms Fatima Stephan and taken on tour that ended at the bridge, where Mr Devon Liburd, on behalf of the Minister of Tourism, the Hon Mr Malcolm Guishard, presented a painting of one of Charlestown’s historical buildings, which houses the Nevis Tourism Authority, to the Captain.
     
    “We are very grateful that the ship has chosen to come to Nevis,” commented Mr
    Liburd. “On behalf of the people of Nevis and on behalf of the Minister of Tourism the Hon Malcolm Guishard in particular, who could not come, we welcome you and we do wish you a good sailing when you leave Nevis. We hope that your first visit will be a memorable one.”
     
    Captain Alberto Palacios thanked the welcome group for the presentation and said that he hoped that the ship would return to Nevis next year. He said that it is owned by a Spanish hotel chain, Hoteles Playa, whose director Mr Leonardo Ropero was on board and acted as the coxswain for the rubber boat that took the Nevisian party to and from the cruise ship.
     
    The ship whose maximum capacity is 300 passengers had 110 crewmembers and had sailed into Charlestown from Basseterre in St. Kitts. It undertakes cruises to Alaska, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. The current voyage had started in Martinique and had taken the passengers (not in order) to Grenada, St. Lucia and St Maarten.

    Vistamar left Charlestown Thursday evening for Antigua and its voyage is expected to terminate on Saturday, in Guadeloupe.
